[Veterinarian Supervised] Winter cold is your enemy! Three golden rules for keeping your precious small dog warm
Winter is here! ❄️ It's the season when pet owners can't let go of their scarves and coats. But wait a minute! Did you know that small dogs, especially Chihuahuas, Toy Poodles, and Miniature Dachshunds, are actually much more susceptible to the cold than we humans?
Because they live close to the ground and have difficulty maintaining body temperature, the cold winter weather can be a major cause of illness for them. Don't just assume that your pet will be fine, but make sure to take all necessary precautions with the right knowledge.
This time, the Petopop editorial team asked a veterinarian to introduce the "three golden rules for cold weather protection" for small dogs!
Golden rule 1: When going for a walk, layering and the right time of day are key!
Walking is an important daily routine, even in winter. However, taking your dog out in the cold without any protection is a no-no. The key is to layer functional clothing.
Rather than dressing your dog in one thick layer of clothing, it's recommended to layer a thin, form-fitting inner layer with a windproof outer layer. This makes it easy to adjust when your dog gets hot from moving around, and also helps prevent chills from sweat. In particular, "belly warmer" dog clothes that protect the dog's tummy from the cold ground and "romper" dog clothes that cover the dog's legs are great for small dogs.
The time of day you take your dog for a walk is also important. Choose the warmest time of day when the temperature is highest to reduce stress on your dog. It is wise to avoid extremely cold times such as early morning or night.
Rule 2: Create a "cozy safe zone" in your room
Something that is surprisingly often overlooked is how to protect yourself from the cold indoors. Even when the heater is on, warm air tends to accumulate at the top, leaving cold air floating around near the floor.
In the area where your small dog usually spends time, create a "warm zone" to protect their body from the cold floor . Dome-shaped beds or beds with raised edges are ideal because they keep out cold air and allow them to warm up easily with their own body heat. Adding a fluffy blanket or hot water bottle (be careful of low-temperature burns!) inside will create a special power spot just for your dog 🐾
Create a space where your beloved dog can feel safe and relaxed with Petopop's carefully selected items , such as high-quality, soft blankets and stylish, warm beds.
Golden Rule 3: Don't forget to moisturize and hydrate in winter
The cold isn't the only threat in winter. Dry air caused by heating is also a major enemy for small dogs. Just like humans, dry air can cause their skin to become dry and their paws to crack.
It's recommended to use a humidifier in the room to maintain the appropriate humidity level, and to gently care for your dog with paw cream before and after walks. Also, some dogs tend to drink less water in the cold, so it's effective to make sure they have fresh water available at all times and to encourage hydration through their diet, such as by pouring a little lukewarm water over their dry food.
With just a little ingenuity and love, your dog's winter comfort can change dramatically. With the right winter protection measures, your dog can survive the cold season full of energy and have fun! ✨
